Being diagnosed with sleep apnea can be a life-changing event. Individuals who suffer from sleep disorders become so inured to their condition that they no longer realize the effect that sleep deprivation has on them. They get used to operating on a limited amount of sleep and never obtaining restorative sleep, they literally don’t know what they are missing. Once they get their first CPAP machine and begin using it, they can be astounded by the difference it makes to reach deeper levels of sleep every night.

Of course, it’s not just a matter of getting a prescription and heading out to buy cpap supplies. Patients need to pay careful attention when their doctor demonstrate how to use the system being prescribed for them. There is a basic CPAP machine, but there are different types of masks, tubing, and other supplies. A doctor will prescribe the system that fits a specific patient’s symptoms and diagnosis. The machines are not one-size-fits-all.

Once the CPAP machine arrives at home, it is important that the patient follows all instructions for care and use of the system. This means following the approved cleaning regime and protecting the machine from mishandling and misuse. A properly cared for CPAP machine that is used in the manner prescribed will literally change the life of a sleep apnea patient.
