The Balearic Islands are situated in the Mediterranean Sea, or more appropriately the Balearic Sea, which is a small section of the Mediterranean located near the Iberian Peninsula. There are four major islands, and each is beautiful and attractive in its own right, though they are also unique and offer diverse aspects to residents and tourists. The islands are extremely popular vacation spots and tourists flock to the 5 star hotels Balearics every summer. The four major islands include Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
Majorca and Minorca are the largest of the four islands, with Majorca being the largest and most populous of them all. The capital city is Palma, which has an incredibly rich and diverse history. Tourism began increasing in great numbers during the 1950s which brought with it changes in the sociological makeup of the island. Millions of international visitors arrive on the island every year and take part in the many entertainment offerings it has. The beaches and scenic views and geographical dynamics are also a major attraction on this island. Minorca is slightly smaller and near by. The cuisine on this island is dominated by Mediterranean flavors, style and ingredient, which tourists greatly enjoy.
Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands and is internationally known for its party scene. Ibiza Town and San Antonio are club capitals and filled with adventurous tourists throughout the season. It is also popular through the fall and winter, when some people prefer a more quite atmosphere on this thriving island. Many of the hotels, restaurants and nightclubs are open all season to accommodate guests any time of the year. Formentera is the smallest of the islands and historically was only accessible by fairy from its near by neighbor Ibiza. Formentera has become extremely popular for tourists in recent decades and more access to the mainland is available. The sandy clear beaches on this island attract many water sports enthusiasts, as do all the islands. Some of the more popular water sports are boogie boarding, surfing, swimming, sail boating and scuba diving.
